Haven at Elysium

Yesterday I went to Austin's goth club, Elysium, for Haven, their "Gothic, Industrial, Synthpop & Eurodance" night.

Location: Elysium is in downtown Austin, very accessible. It is the only full time goth club I've been to. It has lots of space, inside and out, for dancing, smoking, pool, and socializing.

Cover/Drink specials: Cover is $5 for 21+, $10 for 18-21 year olds. Didn't ask about drink specials, but a rum and coke cost me $4. The bartender made my first with white rum, and the second with dark, and both were much stronger than the drinks I had last week at Numbers.

Music: I was hugely disappointed by the DJs. (Not nearly as much as my last experience at Sanctum though.) First, they kept playing VNV Nation, once even twice within three songs. Not cool. Second, most of them didn't seem to know how to blend tracks at all. Third, they didn't play any of my requests. I even put a dollar in the tip jar ("If it's not a TIP, it's just a suggestion"). I wanted to take my money back. Fourth, I had gotten my hopes up about what kind of music I would hear, based on the night's description. I've been keeping myself exposed to new music for a while now, and I had hoped to hear some newish things. The synthpop/Eurodance type tracks were all at least 5-10 years old (and again, the same overplayed tracks by the same artists), and lots of stuff from the 80s as well. I still did a lot of dancing (and learned that my heels are better designed for dancing, and not walking a mile to the club), but I wish more of the music was new and compelling, and not the same old same old. To summarize, the music probably wasn't that bad (except for excessively playing the same artist. That's just gauche), but I certainly learned not to get my hopes up in Austin.

Attendees: A regular crowd, no tourists. Of course, Austin is where all the wierdos in Texas live, so even if there were any tourists, they'd be totally chill, no skanky frat boys or anything. Jon observed that most of the dancing, even to the industrial songs, was more gothy, without enough elbows and fists. I'm not that picky :-) As long as people are enjoying themselves on the dance floor without being douches, they can dance however they want. I certainly do.

Before I left, I went to the Alamo movie theater (Awesome food! What a great idea!) and saw Hugo. Beautiful, wonderful movie. Highly recommended.
