I had an idea for a post, really I did....

One of the things that surprises me greatly about this online stuff is how differently I come across. At least, I think I come across vastly differently online, anyway...

I was at work a few weeks ago, and my cute coworker had figured out how to write messages to other users on our Unix network - so we amused ourselves by writing to each other for a while.

In conversation, a standard reply for me is to say, "Neat!"

In text, a standard reply for me is to say "*chuckles* Heh, I wouldn't have expected anyone to come up with *that* idea... *ponders a bit* Yeah, that is really cool!"

In real life, I am so awful at improvisation. Then on Everquest a few days ago, a situation came up, where I needed to ... enforce, basically, a new thing that my guild has been doing. I mentioned to our guildleader that I needed to check the messageboard quickly to prep, because I'm awful at improv, and her reaction was, "... actually, you're quite good at it."

!?!?! WTF?

People think online that I'm a good roleplayer. !?!?!

Seriously, the dictonomy between online perceptions and real-world realities is *so* vast... I guess I'm not expressing myself very well, but I think it's just crazy.

It's the introversion. It gets us all. Especially the IN (I'm INFP - but I don't believe in that. Same as being a Libra - it just fits my personality somewhat) The computer is a great way of taking away that barrier that an introverted personality would inhibit. The flip side is that I've met people that I know online and when I see them in person I have no clue what to say. I'm practically a mute and half the things I do say they've already read online. Of course the other drawback is that you can say these friendship-killing things online just because you're being honest. Well that's my case.

On the other hand it's nice to have the freedom that being online gives one.

I am nothing irl like I am online.. online I am goofy and social... in person I an usually nervous and and wish everyone would leave LOL. I have never had any real rp with Ivy, but I am sure you are good at it. ;)

hehe thats because I already quasi knew ya and had made sure I was chemically enhanced :P Its much easier when I already have an idea of what the person is like.. its usually when I either

A) Do not know the person
B) Am surrounded by people I do not know (That is horrid lol)
C) Cannot stand the person but for whatever reason am not in a position to express that

Any Faire Folk will be head and shoulders above the average 'dane in both role playing and improvisation. Just because you're not up to your own personal standard, usually set against those gods of theatre that you surround yourself with, doesn't mean you're not good.

Just re-read that, does that make sense? While not being as good in such areas as you want or percieve yourself to be, objectively, you're well ahead of the curve.

Yeah, it makes sence... and I can certainly think of many gods and goddesses here in Minnesota... but I still don't think I'm any good... *sticks out her tongue*

*sighs* Well, EQ has helped a bit certainly... the real test will be to see how well I manage to avoid sucking at nightjasmine's D&D game.. *crosses fingers*

*laughs* But I'd love to see if there's some sort of RP & Improv Standards test... *grins* That would rock. Heh, definately one test that I wouldn't get 95th percentile in. *giggles*
