I saw my first live, in-person bear last night! About 10pm, I went to go to the bathroom before going to bed, and got about 10 feet away from a no-longer-a-baby bear cub that was snuffling around a tree outside the facilities. I started to back away, my left shoe came off, I picked it up and backed away down the stairs until I got a healthy distance away and could put on my shoe and walk home more or less normally. There was a camping family still setting up their tent, and I warned them to be careful of going to use the bathroom. After I got back to the bus, I sat around for a bit, then opted to just squat behind my car instead of trying to go and see if the bear had left.

One of the road signs I see a lot of here on Colorado's front range is [beware of] "Falling Rocks." Last week, I was shown just what sort of event they mean by that, with a little rock slide that took up US-24's shoulder near Manitou Springs, CO. It took us a week to remember the camera to take a picture, the same amount of time that it took the local government to send a road crew out there.
