Sep. 3rd, 2009 01:06 pmAnother nifty thing is I actually spoke some German this weekend. At the end of Sunday a group came in consisting of a professor from St Olaf College, his German fiancee and her (I assume) daughter and mother. I asked the fiancee "Sind Sie Deutsche?" and she responded with a stream of German to which I could only say "Mein Deutsch ist nicht sehr gut." She kindly replied, "Mein Englisch ist nicht viel besser" (or so. my memory is fuzzy). When the little girl wanted earrings and Mom told her "Du hast keine Ohrring" (that is, no pierced ears), I was able to go get an ear cuff and show them a non-pierced option. And when the little girl kept turning her head to the right as I was trying to put the ear cuff in her right ear, I told her "Schau" and pointed so she'd look in the other direction. Of course, this was all prefaced with the assertion, "Ich spreche nur ein bisschen Deutsch" and "Ich möchte Deutsch besser verstehen, aber... I don't practice enough" so they would hopefully be more understanding of any mistakes on my part.
Yay practice!
