I am posting this from my brand new laptop! I got a Toshiba Satellite L355D-S7825 at Best Buy. I was otherwise considering an Acer, but I decided I'd rather spend the extra $50 for an extra gig of RAM, more hard drive space, and the *much* bigger display.

An unexpected selling point: the numeric keypad on the right of the keyboard. That will make data entry so much nicer. This 2.5" long space bar is kind of annoying though.

Even more annoying: I thought I had lost the itsy-bitsy nano-reciever for my cordless mouse. It turns out it was stuck in a corner of the packaging. And I spent at least a half hour tearing my tent apart, too. Oh well, at least my place is cleaner now!

I've been adjusting settings, reading though media, and so forth. Good lord, but Vista has a bunch of stuff running! Well, hopefully that will change once I've gotten my bearings a bit. Tomorrow I need to hunt down the network admin to give him $10 for the month. Not to mention moving into the trailer I'll be living in for the winter, yay!

Congrats on the new laptop. Keep an eye on it though. We have a Toshiba and one thing we found out is that they have horrible heat management. They regularly pack things too tight with inadequate ventilation and cooling.

Ours is not even two years old and sounds like it's trying to lift off when the fan gets going. Granted, it's worse when we're gaming. Playing an MMO like LOTRO and it starts approaching critical overheating after less than an hour. Kira's been unhappy since we got it since the only two games she plays are LOTRO and Oblivion and Toshiba often uses POS Intel faux-graphics chips that aren't supported by, well, anything. It plays LOTRO on ultra-low graphics settings but won't play Oblivion at all.

On the plus side, as long as you don't do anything graphics intensive, a Toshiba will often last 4-5 years or more which is pretty decent for a notebook. And if I remember right, you mostly use your laptop for work and the internet now. Just be careful using it when your down south anywhere without AC.

Thank you for the advice! I don't plan on doing a lot of gaming - there's a fantasy game that I might play networked with other folks in AZ and Scarborough, and one person I know has highly recommended that I get addicted to Travian (http://www.travian.com/), but I don't anticipate spending a lot of money on flashy games. This computer self-rates itself as a 3 for gaming, anyway.
